Tuna melts in a bowl. Enjoy tuna melts without the bread. Paleo-friendly, gluten free.

Tuna melts are one of my favorite comfort foods. When I started a paleo diet this summer, I came up with some grain-free alternatives to my favorite foods. Following a paleo or gluten-free diet does not have to mean giving up the foods that you love to eat. This tuna-melt-in-a-bowl recipe proves just that.

All of the traditional tuna melt components are there – tuna, cheese, mayo, and capers (my fave!) – minus the bread.

Ingredients to make tuna melts in a bowl. Add dippers (crackers & veggies) and you're ready for a meal!

This recipe is perfect for snackers or grazers. If you’re an appetizer-for-dinner type of person like I am, you’ll love this recipe. Serve with a variety of dippers – crackers, veggies, bread and butter pickles – and you have a meal.

As a side note, you can use this tuna mixture to make traditional tuna melts on bread. I think you’ll love the addition of the capers to the mix. They add an unexpected zing of flavor.

Tuna Melts In a Bowl

Cook Time: 18 min

To make this recipe paleo-friendly, omit the cheese or use vegan cheese. I served this dip with gluten-free Blue Diamond Artisan Nut Thins (Sesame Seeds).

  • 2 5-ounce cans of tuna packed in water
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
For serving:
  • Crackers
  • Cucumber slices
  • Red pepper slices
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Bread and butter pickles

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Mix tuna, mayonnaise, cheddar cheese, capers, onion, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  3. Divide tuna mixture and place into 2 medium oven-safe ramekins or 1 larger oven-save bowl.
  4. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes. Serve hot with your choice of dippers.
